Sevenfold Spirits of God – Part 4
The Spirit of understanding is the third of the sevenfold expression (anointing, or flows) of the Holy Spirit. In scripture it’s teamed with the Spirit of wisdom. Isaiah 11:2:
“the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,”
In the last post the Spirit of wisdom was associated with the actions needed to complete “God’s blueprints for the tabernacle” (see Exodus 28:3). God has plans (blueprints) for each of our lives (see Jeremiah 29:11). Correct actions are needed in order to implement God’s plans for our lives our life plans. However, every day we are faced with many, many decisions about which actions to take next. It’s the Spirit of wisdom that will provide God’s judgment calls concerning our next actions. The Spirit of understanding provides the spiritual perception to understand God’s plans.
Daniel sought to understand the prophecies of Jeremiah. For three weeks Daniel pressed into the things of the Lord through fasting and prayer. An angel of the Lord appeared to him:
Daniel 10:12-14 (NIV)
Then he continued, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them. But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia. Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people in the future, for the vision concerns a time yet to come.”
Note that God sent the understanding that Daniel sought from the first day of his request. The understanding of Jeremiah’s prophecies was given to the angel/messenger and he was instructed to provide them to Daniel. This was not to be a visitation but it was an enlightenment which provided Daniel with the ability to comprehend and to walk in understanding. Jesus similarly enlightened his disciples in Luke 24:45, “Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.”
1 John 5:20 (NIV)
We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
The hidden treasures become known to you through the Spirit of understanding, and you receive insight into how God works. Understanding empowers us to dig deep into mysteries of the Kingdom. As we receive, we see a thirty, sixty, or one hundredfold of God’s mysteries. This is the ‘good ground’ that received seed in Matthew 13:23.
